North Essex Mind and Spirit Meeting
7th March 2019

The group session was led by Anaar Shivji at Kingsland Church Colchester and was well attended by over 30 people from a variety of backgrounds. The topic was Understanding the impact of Trauma on Refugees.  Anaar related her experience with working with refugees in the area concentrating on the mental health impact of trauma, looking at depression, anxiety, stress, particularly post-traumatic stress.  The stages of trauma were considered, and practical advice offered, also recognising that some people do not actively seek help. Spirituality and trauma were discussed and with suggestions as to how faith and communities can provide help.  The session concluded with a case study presented by Maria who works with an organisation called Refugee Action.  The talk was followed by a delicious lunch provided by Kingsland church.

The feedback from the talk was very positive and the attendees found it extremely informative.
